Pre-Season will start Wednesday 7th July.  Either Clapham Common or Burgess Park…. More to follow.

    Lancers Continue Good Form (Just)

The day started well with the kit being remembered at the first attempt, and after a typical warm up led by Niall we lined up for the kick off. The opposition seemed very keen – warming up for almost as long as us – which is unusual in the intimidating environment that is ‘The Cage’, and from the size of them we knew we were in for a tough game.

Almost immediately Dartfordians tried to use their superior bulk to drive through the Lancers defence, but some resilient defending saw us break out and exert some pressure of our own. Unfortunately their fly half had a boot on him and we were pinned back in our 22 time and time again. With our lineout struggling to cope with their shortened line – now I know how the oppo must feel most weeks – they drove over 2 line outs from close range.

We countered quickly with a try from Chris Callaway following some great hands and strong running by No. 8 Yemi Abitogun. However Dartfordians drove over another try from short range. Half time the score was 15-7 and the less said the better – at least their fly half couldn’t kick.

Encouraged by the vocal presence of 1st team captain Nich Bull on the sidelines the Lancers pushed on in the 2nd half and a great turnover by Yemi left him with an easy 20 metre sprint to the line. A couple of penalties by Tej – including a stunner from the touchline – put the Lancers 20-15 up.

The last 5 minutes were spent defending on our line as Dartfordians threw everything at us. A great try saving tackle by Simon Molloy earned him man of the match and won us the game. His awful attempt at chanting 1-2-3 Lancers (how many times have you done it this season?) earned him Dick of the Day too.

Tourists Lose but Show Much Promise

In what seems like a rare home match the Tourists were to set their stall against a strong Bexley II’s. The Tourists looked lightweight with a number of forwards missing and some players new to the game, however what was to come showed that size isn’t actually everything. Although overall the Tourists lost, it was a game to be proud of and the Tourists suffered from not being able to penetrate in the last 22.

With the Tourists fielding a pack where both the second rows normally play at centre the game was mainly played around the rucks and mauls. Bexley knew that they had a size advantage and were using it to draw in the Tourists before getting the ball out through the hands. The first half saw the Tourists surprise the oppo by defending exceptionally well and some big hits were put into the Bexley players leaving them frustrated at not being able to break us down.  Unfortunately Bexley managed to break through just before half time to go up 0-7 into the break. The Tourists had put in 100% to produce their best performance of the season so far, and with the tradition being a stronger second half showing things were looking very positive.

Unfortunately despite playing well and continuing to defend well and attack at pace, the Tourists still lacked the cutting edge and were unable to put points onto the board. The teams were evenly matched apart from Speedy Gonzalez their winger with thrusters on his boots who was practically unstoppable on the wing. Three tries from him secured Bexley a win in what was actually a very tight game. Bexley’s comments were that we had surprised them with a very committed display.

Despite the score there was some good performances put in by some Tourists players. MoM went to Elliot, who was playing in practically his first game (he played 10 minutes a couple of weeks back). Elliott added strength to the backs and his defending, despite being unorthodox, was awesome and he also displayed some strong running with the ball in hand. Munch was a very close runner up being responsible for  the Tourists quickly turning over a few scrums. It’s also worth mentioning Pinky who was strong in defence and composed at full back, and Mike who was playing his first Southwark Game and hopefully we will be seeing more of his pacey running in the coming weeks.

    This Weekend – CORRECTION

Hi guys, unfortunately there is an error on the fixtures page which I am in the process of correcting. Essentially it wrongly states that the 1s and 3s are at home. this was the case at one point (when Beckenham were having pitch problems) but is now no longer true. Therefore the ones are away and the 3s are at home with a normal kick off to be confirmed. As of now the fixtures will state that the 1s are away.

2nd XV Rebels vs Old Alleynians IVs CANCELLED

Unfortunately Alleynians phoned up to cancel last night. Given the number of injuries and players away this week we have decided not to find a friendly match, but to move people into the 1sts/3rds/let people have a rest and recovery weekend.  I am sure the captains will contact you shortly if they havent already done so.  If you are resting this weekend then it would be great to have a bit of support for the 1sts who are playing at home, 2:30 k.o and support Derek in potentially his last game for the Lancers.

This weekend… Matches, Players Meeting and Pub Golf

beerAnother important weekend approaches; the 1s are at home, the 2s away. The 1s face our nemesis in RBS (the only team to beat us both home and away last year and who got promoted with us), while not believing that revenge is a healthy spirit it would be nice to beat them. The 2s are looking to cement their impressive second place in the league against Askeans II. This is a really important game as Askeans Is play in the league the 1s hope to enter next year so beating them would be a really good marker of intent. We have had a really difficult selection dilemma this week as have had an abundance of players to choose from. Apologies to those who we could not fit in, we have been lucky enough to get dispensation from Askeans to take extra subs though. We have tried to pick those who have constantly trained and played over the preceding few weeks. Those not chosen, please do still come and support us, either at home or away and join us after the game, we would really like to have been able to get everyone who wanted to onto the field. Role on next year and hopefully three teams!

After the games we are all meeting up in All Bar One at London Bridge for our monthly players meeting. We’ll be nominating Club Man of the Month and most Improved Player of the Month, along with short match reports from both captains and hearing from each who won man of the match. It will also be a really good opportunity to update you on some of the stuff that is happening around the club.

It is really important that as MANY of you get there as possible, we’ll be congregating from about 6pm but no doubt will liaise precise timings dependant on train time etc by mobile phone. This is really important opportunity where we can build a sense of community and identity around the club, not least as we do not have a club house so we need to work extra hard to help people feel they belong. The link for the all-bar-one is here:

    http://www.london-se1.co.uk/restaurants/map/1/all-bar-one

For all those partaking afterwards there will be pub golf. Chris C has circulated the score cards already by e-mail already. I’ll have my car so won’t be drinking or taking part in the pub golf but will be there for the players meeting. PLEASE DO COME! I cannot emphasise how important it is which ever team you play for you’re are as much part of this club as anyone else.
